OUR STORY:
In March of 2000 while serving as a Missionary in Lima, Peru, the company’s founder, Andrew Sloop, became friends with a local carpenter. Andrew took his meals in the carpenters humble home. Under the straw roof of the dining room Andrew ate at a table and sat in chairs that would have been better suited to the dining room of the Biltmore House.
Upon inquiry to the carpenter as to the origin of the fine furniture, he simply explained that he had made it, and that it was his custom to make such pieces on a regular basis. Andrew took great interest in the fact that craftsmen of this level of ability were still to be found. In an age of increasing automation these tradesmen are slowly and surely becoming extinct, and such beautiful and complex pieces have become exceedingly rare. Andrew made it his mission to stem the exodus of such craftsmen from their trade. He did this by setting up a reliable system with quality controls and supervision through which these craftsmen could work to produce highly intricate pieces.
In this endeavor Andrew came to make the aquaintance of Augusto Obregon, the son of a Peruvian carpenter. Having graduated from business school in Peru, Augusto decided to make an enterprise of his father’s carpentry shop. Over 18 years Augusto honed and perfected the production techniques necessary to produce highly intricate works at an exceptional pace and with great quality control. Together Andrew and Augusto continued to refine technique, design, production, and logistics to the extent that they gained great proficiency in producing highly custom works to exact tolerances and in large enough quantities to market to increasingly larger clients.
As an organization, Amazon Millworks seeks to provide that same highly individual and customized service to an ever larger client base including home owners, architects, designers, and commercial and residential builders.
